Lady Pilots hang on to beat SAGU
February 18, 2012
WAXAHACHIE, Tex. - The LSU Shreveport Lady Pilots extended their current win streak to three games with a win over the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lady Lions 59-51 in the Shaffer Center giving them their 14th win in their last 15 games.
The Lady Pilots used some key three-pointers first half, converting of five of 12, to keep pace with the Lady Lions boosting them to a three-point, 33-30, lead at the half. LSUS struggled thought in the second half shooting just 20% thanks to the stingy SAGU defense.
The LSUS defense was just as stingy allowing the home team to make 25% in the second half as they did an outstanding job of guarding the three-point line late in the second half and did not allow SAGU with a good look from beyond the arc as they were desperate to try and launch some three's to get back into the contest.
Meoshi Bradley had a big three in the first half as she led the team with 14 points while Sharde Henry's three with 14:50 to go in the first half brought the Lady Pilots within one as she finished with 13 points. Jennifer Hicks topped off the double-digit scorers with 10.
LSUS (21-6, 19-2 RRAC) remains tied with Langston for the top spot in the regular season standings but still need the Lionesse to lose one more than they do the rest of the way for the title. LSUS has three games left on the schedule, two on the road at Jarvis and Wiley, and have one home date with Texas College. Langston has two left at home against Huston-Tillotson and Jarvis. The champion could not be decided until the last game as they have to travel to Our Lady of the Lake for their final game.
SAGU (6-18, 6-15 RRAC) loses their fifth straight game including six of their last seven but still hang on to the 8th spot in the standings by half a game over Bacone.
The Lady Pilots won the war but lost the battle on the boards tonight 36-32. The LSUS defense held the SAGU offense to a slim shooting percentage in the second half and capitalized at the free-throw line sinking 15 out of 20.
LSUS launched 22 attempts from beyond the arc making six while Southwestern made just five of 18.
The next game for the Lady Pilots will be on Monday, Feb. 20, at 5:30 in Hawkins, Texas, against Jarvis Christian.
