Undergraduate Studies

Accounting, Bachelor of Science
Accounting prepares the student for a variety of careers in public accounting, private industry, and government. The accounting curriculum is an excellent foundation for advanced study in fields such as business administration, management, law, public administration, and taxation.

Biological Sciences, Bachelor of Science
Biological Science opens many doors to employment and graduate studies. All individuals pursuing careers in the health care delivery field must have a fundamental understanding and background in the life sciences. A degree in Biology prepares the student for admission to graduate schools of biology; professional schools of medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine; and various allied technology, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, etc; as well as baccalaureate level positions in research, teaching and sales. Biological Sciences majors may choose the Environmental Science concentration as a specific area of study.

Chemistry, Bachelor of Science
Chemistry prepares students for careers in many specialized areas-from biotechnology and materials science to environmental protection. Many graduates will work in industries ranging from huge multinational corporations to small entrepreneurial firms with the balance in academic, biomedical, and public sector institutions. Most chemists are involved in either research and development or production of chemicals and materials. Many laboratory chemists perform analyses for biomedical, forensic, environmental, and production quality control purposes. Others are responsible for facility environmental health and product applications.

Community Health, Bachelor of Science
Community Health majors prepare to work with groups of people, usually in a community setting, promoting physical activity and assisting individuals and communities to modify and enhance lifestyles to promote health and prevent disease. Students learn to develop community-based educational programs which promote healthy lifestyles. American Humanics is a specific certification for those interested in management of non-profit organizations. The Health Behavior concentration is an enhanced study of health focusing on factors influencing human behavior and the resultant health decision-making practices. The Physical Activity concentration is for those individuals seeking expertise in fitness and wellness venues, program designed to comply for American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Health Fitness Instructor and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) guidelines. Pre-Physical Therapy/Pre-Occupational Therapy is offered for students utilizing Community Health as the baccalaureate degree major for fulfilling prerequisite requirements for admission to the LSU School of Allied Health Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy programs at both New Orleans and Shreveport campuses.

Computer Science, Bachelor of Science
Computer Science qualifies students for employment with local, state, regional and federal agencies. Banks, accounting firms, manufacturing and service agencies employ programmers to assist with computer systems. A system analyst's position is usually obtained after a few years of employment as a programmer. Some students go on to get graduate degrees in Computer Science in preparation for a career in research or teaching. Students can choose a concentration in software development, information systems, network security or animation and visual effects.

Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Criminal Justice
Criminal Justice provides students with knowledge of and a basic understanding in the practices and problems within major fields in criminal justice including law enforcement, courts/judiciary, corrections, forensic science and private security, as well as juvenile justice administration and probation and parole. The curriculum assists students in developing a number of skills essential to effective job performance within the fields of criminal justice, including analytical thinking, written and communication skills, as well as an appreciation for the values and operations of the legal, criminal justice and juvenile justice systems.

Early Childhood Education (PK-3), Bachelor of Science
Early Childhood Education (PK-3) prepares students wishing to teach in pre-school, kindergarten, or primary grades. Please note that certification resulting from successful completion of this program does not certify students to teach above the third-grade level.

Elementary Education (1-5), Bachelor of Science
Elementary Education (1-5) prepares students wishing to teach the general elementary education curriculum for grades 1-5. Students wishing to teach fine arts in elementary schools should see the appropriate curriculum under "Elementary and Secondary Education."

Elementary and Secondary Education - Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts
Elementary and Secondary Education - Fine Arts prepares students wishing to teach fine arts in elementary schools and high schools.

Elementary and Secondary Education - French, Bachelor of Arts
Elementary and Secondary Education - French prepares students wishing to teach French in elementary or high schools.

Elementary and Secondary Education - Spanish, Bachelor of Arts
Elementary and Secondary Education - Spanish prepares students wishing to teach Spanish in elementary or high schools.

English, Bachelor of Arts 
English majors receive a comprehensive background in British and American literature, with opportunities to explore in depth topics of personal interest. The introductory courses acquaint students with various theories of literary criticism, how to apply them, and how to write analytically about literature. The upper-level courses allow students to study writers from the major periods of both American and British literature.

Finance, Bachelor of Science
Finance teaches the techniques that managers use to make and evaluate all types of organizational decisions. Majors take introductory course work in business finance, investments, insurance, and real estate. Financial Services introduces the student to financial planning, insurance sales and underwriting, commercial and residential real estate sales and development, real estate lending, real estate appraisal, and real estate counseling. Financial Analysis emphasizes quantitative skills and helps students prepare for careers in areas such as securities analysis, financial research, banking, and corporate finance and provides a solid background for further studies at the graduate level.

Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts

Fine Arts majors are offered a selection of courses that leads to a better understanding of the role of art in human history; a basic knowledge of visual principles, media, and techniques utilized in studio practices; and ample electives in art to enable the student, with faculty guidance, to select a studio area for advanced creative work. Animation and Visual Effects majors prepare to compete in the contemporary business environment, including work among the local film-making community. Graphic Design majors are trained in the use of the various software and hardware necessary to get a creative job in the fields of graphic design and advertising.

General Business Administration, Bachelor of Science
General Business Administration provides the maximum flexibility to acquire knowledge from all fields of business, including accounting, business law, management and marketing, and prepares students for multipurpose management roles in small organizations or as entrepreneurs. Course scheduling provides the opportunity to complete all requirements in evening. Land and Energy Management concentration is designed for students who are primarily interested in areas involving the business of oil and gas exploration and development, as well as students preparing to enter into careers dealing with land and real estate resource management, leasing and title verification, and other related areas. General Business Administration majors may also pursue a concentration in the area of International Business.

General Studies, Bachelor of General Studies
General Studies provides an opportunity for mature students to create an individualized, interdisciplinary program of study designed to fit their educational and professional goals, particularly when those goals cannot be served by way of traditional degree programs. The program allows students to make full use of courses taken at other accredited institutions, and to choose an area of concentration that combines different fields of study in creative, innovative ways. Through careful advising, students are encouraged to design a course of study to meet their personal needs and interests and to prepare them for the job market.

History, Bachelor of Arts
History majors prepare for a variety of academic and corporate career opportunities, including the pursuit of advanced degrees in history, law, and education. The degree provides the student with a well-rounded education that private and public business sectors desire.

Management and Administration, Bachelor of Science
Management and Administration is designed to provide students with the skills needed to coordinate and manage human, financial, physical, and information resources to achieve an organization's goals. As a complement to their major in Management and Administration, students may elect to design a program of study in Human Resource Management. Management and Administration majors may also choose a concentration in the area of International Business.

Marketing, Bachelor of Science
Marketing emphasizes the facilitation of exchanges between one business and another as well as between businesses and consumers. Key marketing activities include designing and modifying products, pricing, selling and sales management, and gathering and interpreting market information. Career opportunities in marketing include retail management and buying, industrial and retail sales, distribution management; promotion and brand management, and market research. Marketing majors may pursue a concentration in the area of International Business or Advertising Design.

Mass Communications, Bachelor of Arts
Students prepare to become broadly educated, well-trained communicators in print, broadcast journalism, public relations. Mass communication students will become familiar with computer design, new media broadcast techiniques and writing for social networking audiences. In the senior year, students will intern under the direction of a community professional in the field.

Math and Physics, Bachelor of Science
Mathematics prepares students for a wide variety of job opportunities as well as for graduate school. In addition to the degrees in pure math and secondary education, students can receive training in related mathematical areas such as statistics and actuarial science. Physics offers an excellent starting point for students interested in future graduate studies in physics or engineering, as well as providing a solid foundation for students seeking a career in a variety of laboratory, industrial, or engineering settings. The program is supported by faculty members with areas of specialization in general physics, computational physics, astrophysics, and electronics.

Political Science, Bachelor of Arts
Political Science prepares students with reasoning and analytical skills and competence in oral and written expression so that they may pursue careers in federal, state, and local government, private work within interest groups, campaign management and political polling, as well as pursue advanced degrees in law, education, journalism and political science.

Psychology, Bachelor of Science
Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. The requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology are designed to introduce the student to the broad spectrum of psychological knowledge, skills, and dispositions, including an early exposure to research methods and statistics. The psychology major prepares students for entry-level general employment and for graduate study in psychology and related fields such as law, medicine, and others.

Secondary Education, Bachelor of Arts
Secondary Education prepares students wishing to teach grades 6 -12 in a varierty of subjects. Concentrations include: biology, chemistry, English, mathemtics, physics and social studies.

Sociology, Bachelor of Arts 
Sociology majors receive the highest degree of education to prepare them for careers in human services, social services, criminal justice, education, government, research and business. The sociology curriculum offers an excellent foundation for advanced study in fields such as program administration, law enforcement, and data analysis.
